Saturday ride report
Tracy joined Joe and I at 8:00 for our Saturday ride. It was overcast and lightly raining so a command decision was quickly reached to forego Calvin's and just ride to Catawba. We took the north route to Hurst-Pisgah-SR56. It was a constant rain such that we had to remove glasses and squint against the pelting rain drops, and the spray from Tracy's wheel, to see where we were going. We were having one of those freaky wind days that make it seem that which ever direction we went, we were riding into a head wind. I was thoroughly soaked by the time we got to Catawba, but the breakfast was hot and delicious. Bob told us he is getting his tomato plants out, so we can look forward to that most excellent of summer treats, pancakes and tomatoes. But even with the soaking, it was a great ride, and I'm glad I went. Now, I have to go stuff newspapers into my shoes.

Calvin's Challenge
Well, I know that some of us are signed up for Calvin's Challenge tomorrow. The weather forecast looks terrible. I didn't ride last weekend because of the threat of weather. (silly me) So, I really need to just suit up and do it. For myself, I am concerned that I will be woefully undertrained for the TOSRV ride next weekend.
Here is my plan: I will swing by and pick up Joe at 8:00 AM. We will drive over to Shawnee HS and do day-of-ride sign-up for Calvin's. (fun ride) Starts at 9:00. We will be on road bikes and will do the 50 mile loop minimum, maybe more, then go eat someplace. If it's raining at 8:00, we may just ride to Catawba. Or we might just drive to Catawba.
I reduced my reservation at the Hyatt next weekend to just one room. I think it is going to be me, Brian K, and Caleb K. I hope those youngsters can keep up with me. If I can just remember where I put that heart medication.

Seven-time Tour de France champion partners with natural foods company
April 28, 2010 (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) – Honey Stinger, the manufacturer of honey-based nutritional foods, announces a partnership with professional cyclist Lance Armstrong. In addition to future product development and endorsement of Honey Stinger energy gels, bars and organic chews, Armstrong becomes part of the ownership team in the Steamboat Springs-based company.
“I first tried Honey Stinger products during a mountain bike race in Colorado,” says Armstrong. “I was impressed with the great taste and energy they provided. Honey Stinger works for me in training and racing because you want to eat them and they work. I like the whole team – they understand what athletes need and they’re great to work with. I’m excited to be part of the Stinger team and work with them on expanding the products and business.

Drink Up!
April 27, 2010
A Workout Without Water Makes Us Cranky
Water, it seems, isn't just the source of life. It's the source of a good mood, or at least an antidote for a bad mood. The Tufts Journal reports that researchers at that university found that athletes who did high-impact aerobic activities for 60 to 75 minutes without adequate hydration were more likely to report feeling fatigued, confused, angry, depressed or tense than those who engaged in similar activities and drank enough fluids. While the data also suggested mild dehydration has some negative influence on cognition, the researchers found that mood was the main victim of too much exercise with too little water.

Colorado trip
I am going on vacation in August to Colorado and my first day there I will be going to the Leadville 100 Race. Will take tons of pix. Other plans are to climb Mount Evans by bike (highest paved road in North America at over 14,000 feet). Have driven to the top about a half a dozen times. Two mountains on two awesome trips in one summer! How did I get so lucky?
