Usual Saturday protocol. 7:00 AM at Joe's, probably standard route, Vernon-Asbury, Jones, etc, 20 miles or so total. Breakfast stop at Catawba. Latest report shows 55 degrees, light rain. A rare respite from the biting winter cold. We will look forward to giving the heat packs a rest. Work off that Christmas paunch.

Lance Armstrong's girlfriend expecting baby

·
Wed Dec 24, 8:40 am ET
AFP/File – Embattled cycling star Lance Armstrong (seen here on December 4) finally has some good news in his life …
LOS ANGELES (AFP) – Cycling star Lance Armstrong is expecting a baby with his girlfriend, Anna Hansen, in June, according to an announcement by the seven-time Tour de France champion.
It will be the fourth child for Armstrong who battled cancer in the past .
"Anna and I are thrilled to confirm that we are expecting in June and our families are ecstatic and grateful," Armstrong said. "We are very much looking forward to what 2009 brings on many fronts. We appreciate respecting our privacy, as we are both eager to celebrate the holidays as a family."
The 37-year-old American has three children from his previous marriage with Kristin Richards.
After being diagnosed with testicular cancer in 1996, Armstrong underwent chemotherapy treatment as the cancer spread to other parts of his body.
The children with his ex-wife were conceived using sperm Armstrong stockpiled prior to his cancer treatment.
It was initially thought the chemotherapy would leave him unable to have further children.
This time the couple are expecting without the use of artificial fertilization.
Armstrong retired in 2005 but announced in September he was going to make a comeback. In order to get ready for the 2009 Tour de France, he plans to race in the Giro d'Italia and Australia's Tour Down Under.
News of his return has drawn mixed reviews in cycling circles.
Armstrong has been accused of doping practices on several occasions, most notably in an article in French sports newspaper L'Equipe in 2005, claiming six urine samples from his 1999 Tour victory contained the blood-boosting drug EPO.
Armstrong has always denied doping and the international cycling body cleared him in 2006.
Armstrong complained last week that he is being targeted by international drug testers before being ruled eligible to return to competition.
Armstrong claims to have been drug tested 11 times in the past 19 weeks and twice in the same week this month. The latest test was conducted by officials from the International Cycling Union on Thursday at his Texas home.
"UCI control. They flew a guy from Germany for it. That makes a ton of sense," Armstrong wrote on Twitter, a social networking website.
Armstrong was placed under a six-month probation period by the United States Anti-doping Agency at the beginning of August.
Armstrong needs to pass USADA's out-of-competition testing pool before his cycling comeback can become official.

A great time was had by all on Saturday

It is said that there is no greater gift than friendship (unless you’re getting one of James’s memory books).

This past Saturday Dec 20th, 2008 our cycling group, The Clark County Riders, got together for breakfast after our 17+ mile ride, as we usually do most Saturday mornings, but with a slightly different twist. On this particular Saturday before Christmas, we were joined by our families (none cycling, but supportive members) to share in the coveted pancake eating and cycling conversation that our group is so good at. A good time was had by all – much thanks to James for thinking of the newlywed format trivia game that worked its magic over the crowd. Great idea James! I think the girls really liked it. I even overheard talk of the girls riding with the guys – WOW! Wouldn’t that be something for the memory book!

Speaking of the Memory book, I want to take a moment to express my gratitude and thanks for the books that were presented by James at the breakfast. They were awesome! Words can’t describe how I feel about the images my book contains. James, the photography and attention to detail was truly amazing. I can only say that if my house was burning down, and only had time to grab a couple of things, the book and my bike would be two of them (of course my family would be right with me helping me carry my bike).
Caleb, thanks for the well crafted slideshow, I loved the energy and you made the images come to life (I relived the pain of everyone on those hills trying to catch you).
Kathy, thanks for your patients, I understand James now has some cleaning up to do post project.

Saturdays ride was the best ever on a bike I can remember, despite the bone chilling cold and biting head winds (all day). Seems like when you’re with friends doing what you love, you don’t mind some of the minor discomforts.

I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas from my family to yours.
Happy Riding and remember; those who show are those who go!

A Great Ride!

23 degrees to start and a bit of a headwind, but everyone made it with no casualties, other than Joe's glasses. ( Joe, I hope Santa brings you new glasses, because, frankly, we're a little embarrassed.) There were 8 riders. We were joined at the restaurant by our wives (our enablers). A good time was had by all. James organised a trivia contest. Joe's daughter Nikki won. Caleb put together a great DVD of the entire 2008 season. James made a wonderful scrapbook of the year's activities. Thanks to all for the excellent 2008 season.
