CCR - Who We Are
Clark County Riders is a loosely organized group of bicycle riders who gather each Saturday morning for a breakfast ride. Our primary objective is fun and fitness. We ride generally from New Moorefield to Catawba by any one of several dozen different routes ranging from 14 miles to 30 miles, with opportunities for short-cuts or power loops for those needing extra miles for an upcoming event or whatever. We have breakfast at Sis’s restaurant in Catawba, where we enjoy each other’s fellowship and discuss any number of important issues such as the seedings for the NCAA tournament or the aerodynamic properties of a particular water bottle cage. We have no charter, no dues, no officers, and no sanction from any organization. We invite any and all to join us, at their own discretion and risk, to ride on the public roads. Each rider is responsible for their own safety. The only rule we have is “Those who show are those who go!”, which means those who are present at depart time are the ones who participate. It is suggested, but not required, to wear a helmet, to carry a cell phone, and to carry with them sufficient repair gear to fix a flat tire, or other minor problem. Someone will be able to assist if need be. Participants are generally male but ladies are welcome and have joined us occasionally. Ride updates, depart times, photos, announcements, and trash talk are posted on this blog “Joe-CCR.blogspot.com”. Sometimes the specific route is posted ahead of time, and sometimes it is determined at depart time. We have a wide range of fitness and abilities. On a given ride, we typically all follow the same route although each rider goes at their own pace. Anyone who is new to the group, or unsure of the route, someone will make sure you don’t get lost. The lead group will often take an extra loop (power loop) to equalize the arrival time at Catawba. We began this group in the summer of 2006 and have been riding pretty much 52 weeks a year since then. Yes, we ride through the winter except when road conditions prohibit. At such times we might meet at CJB for a hike, and then go to breakfast. Several within our group participate in organized rides. Favorites include TOSRV, Vandalia Freedom Ride, Youngs Ride, and the Hilly Hundred. Sometimes we will do a special Saturday ride to prepare for an upcoming big ride. We have been known to ride down the bike path to Corwin and back in preparation for TOSRV. We have mapped out a ride up to Zanesfield and East Liberty, dubbed the “Highpoint Hundred”, to prepare us for the Hilly Hundred. Occasionally we do a birthday ride, with the miles equal to the age of the celebrant. Other traditions include a new years day ride to Cracker Barrel, and also a ride there on Thanksgiving morning. Typically, we are on road bikes, but sometimes we ride a single speed, and on occasion we will be in a scooter mood and ride the footbike for a change of pace and to work different muscles.
